The stated goal of this project by ESJF, Centropa and FJH is to create awareness of both the historical and contemporary significance of Jewish cemeteries through educational outreach, teacher trainings, competitions as well as research and publication.
Based on intensive research and teaching in seven European countries, we aim to create the broadest possible educational work on Jewish cemeteries in Europe. The focus countries are Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine.
The action follows up on a two pilot projects from 2018 and 2019 and uses the experience gained from them.
It consists of a series of activities such as seminars, webinars, youth and art university competitions.
By choosing specific model schools in each of the seven participating member countries, we create specific learning sites to more focused research and teaching activities on Jewish cemeteries in Europe.
The teaching and learning activities will take place both in absentia as well as on-site at cemeteries in order to make the content as directly experiential as possible.
The importance of tourism is also directly addressed through the inclusion of special development seminars for tour guides and a conference for representatives of the tourism sector.
We from ESJF, Centropa and FJH are looking forward to a very instructive and above all exciting time and would be happy to share it with as many interested people as possible.
The European Jewish Cemeteries Iniative provides practical solutions on how to physically protect the Jewish cemeteries of Europe. The initiative’s preservation work aims to construct walls with locking gates around vulnerable cemeteries and look after the cemeteries’ general upkeep. By doing this, the ESJF Project hopes to preserve Jewish memory, especially in so-called ‘priority areas such as the former Soviet-bloc and South-Eastern Europe.
The Foundation for Jewish Heritage locates and researches vulnerable Jewish heritage sites and develops strategies to protect and promote sustainably alongside local partners. By doing so, the Foundation aims to educate communities about past and present Jewish life.
Centropa is a non-profit, Jewish historical institute dedicated to preserving 20th century Jewish family stories and photos from Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and disseminating these stories and photos through films, books and exhibitions. Our main office is in Vienna. But we also have offices in Budapest, Hamburg and Washington DC. The Centropa education program is currently managed by the following team.
Findings of our program will be published on this website, along with event invitations, competition calls, and lots of resources for educators and NGOs.
